Gain of function

It’s been 2 years since covid-19 rolled into our lives and suck all the happiness out. Though without loosing hope we all consolidated and each other and tried to live our lives at the best possible way. Despite of these many months research, the exact cause of Covid- 19 still remains a suspense. Some researchers believe it to be a zoonotic disease, some believe it to be a mutation an existing virus and such many more, but the most interesting one is the Gain of Function theory, which is believed to be the most accepted theory worldwide.

The first case of Covid-19, as we all know was reported in the Wuhan city of China, in December, 2019. After that, the virus hasn’t stopped itself from spreading. It has reached every corner on the Earth mutating itself and making as many variants as in human race. It seems to compete homo sapiens and want to prove itself as, the superior of all species (which homo sapiens always claimed to be for years). According to this Gain of Function theory, the virus is said to be evolved in the Wuhan Institute of virology, in the city of Wuhan, China. This is the reason the news channels round the world are blaming China, for its virus conspiracy, many of them claimed that the reason behind spreading this virus is to wipe out China’s old population. Now, let us talk about the gain of function theory.

Remember the Marvel Series film, Avengers: Age of Ultron; where Tony Stark (the most beloved Iron man), wanted to make an Ultron to protect the Earth from harmful external forces and ends up making an enemy of the world. In this theory, the core most notion remains the same. Gain of function research is a biomedical research related to the altering an organism or disease in a way that increases transmissibility, pathogenesis, or the kinds of hosts that can be infected by microorganisms. This research’s purpose is to reveal targets so that emerging infectious diseases can be predicted and vaccines and therapeutics can be developed beforehand. Introducing a mutation that would allow SARS virus to infect rats in a controlled laboratory situation would be considered a "gain of function" experiment as the virus did not previously have that function. However, such experiments are carried so that it could help reveal which parts of the virus are responsible for its host range, empowering the creation of antiviral medicines which block this function. This is the reason, United states of America is said to have funded it, and afterwards stopped the funding, due to conflicts and controversy. But sources are there that the gain of function research was being funded indirectly and continued to be practiced in the Wuhan Institute of Virology, China. To practice such researches, one has to take safety measures of level 4, but the institute has said to carry out the research in a safety level below that, due to which the Covid-19 came to human contact and spread all over the Earth. So, it all seems to be evolved due to China’s researcher’s negligence and hence the we all accuse China.

In the current scenario there still isn’t any reliable proof of the virus being evolved from Wuhan lab and hence China still can’t be convicted officially. In all this chaos China is still living in his own world, it is demanding a Noble Prize in physiology or medicine, for the contribution of Wuhan Lab, in the field of its great research on Covid-19.
